Background of the Study: Malaria remains a major public health issue in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas, where access to healthcare and malaria treatment is often limited. Yobe State, like many other states in northern Nigeria, faces a high burden of malaria, with many residents living in rural communities where healthcare facilities are scarce and far-reaching (Usman et al., 2023). Adherence to malaria treatment is essential for preventing drug resistance, reducing the burden of the disease, and improving health outcomes. However, various barriers such as financial constraints, lack of education, cultural beliefs, and poor healthcare infrastructure hinder effective malaria treatment adherence in rural communities (Haruna et al., 2023).
Nurses play a pivotal role in ensuring that patients adhere to prescribed malaria treatments through education, counseling, and follow-up. This study will investigate the barriers to effective malaria treatment adherence in rural communities in Yobe State, focusing on the factors influencing treatment compliance and the role of nurses in overcoming these barriers.
Statement of the Problem: Despite efforts to combat malaria in Nigeria, adherence to prescribed treatment remains a challenge in rural areas of Yobe State. This issue contributes to the persistence of malaria transmission and the development of drug-resistant malaria strains. Nurses in these communities are essential in addressing the barriers to adherence, but their effectiveness is often undermined by various socio-cultural, economic, and healthcare-related factors. This study aims to identify these barriers and evaluate how nurses can enhance treatment adherence.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: The study will focus on rural communities in Yobe State, examining both healthcare settings and household practices. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported adherence and the logistical difficulties of reaching remote communities.
