Background of the Study: Malaria remains a major public health issue in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas, where access to healthcare and malaria treatment is often limited. Yobe State, like many other states in northern Nigeria, faces a high burden of malaria, with many residents living in rural communities where healthcare facilities are scarce and far-reaching (Usman et al., 2023). Adherence to malaria treatment is essential for preventing drug resistance, reducing the burden of the disease, and improving health outcomes. However, various barriers such as financial constraints, lack of education, cultural beliefs, and poor healthcare infrastructure hinder effective malaria treatment adherence in rural communities (Haruna et al., 2023).

Nurses play a pivotal role in ensuring that patients adhere to prescribed malaria treatments through education, counseling, and follow-up. This study will investigate the barriers to effective malaria treatment adherence in rural communities in Yobe State, focusing on the factors influencing treatment compliance and the role of nurses in overcoming these barriers.

Statement of the Problem: Despite efforts to combat malaria in Nigeria, adherence to prescribed treatment remains a challenge in rural areas of Yobe State. This issue contributes to the persistence of malaria transmission and the development of drug-resistant malaria strains. Nurses in these communities are essential in addressing the barriers to adherence, but their effectiveness is often undermined by various socio-cultural, economic, and healthcare-related factors. This study aims to identify these barriers and evaluate how nurses can enhance treatment adherence.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To identify the barriers to effective malaria treatment adherence in rural communities in Yobe State.
  2. To assess the role of nurses in promoting malaria treatment adherence in these communities.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving malaria treatment adherence in rural Yobe State.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the barriers to effective malaria treatment adherence in rural communities in Yobe State?
  2. How do nurses contribute to improving malaria treatment adherence in these communities?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to overcome barriers to adherence to malaria treatment?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Socioeconomic factors, including the cost of treatment, contribute significantly to poor adherence to malaria treatment in rural Yobe State.
  2. Nurse-led interventions, such as patient education and follow-up visits, improve adherence to malaria treatment in rural areas.
  3. Cultural beliefs and traditional medicine practices hinder effective adherence to malaria treatment in rural communities.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: The study will focus on rural communities in Yobe State, examining both healthcare settings and household practices. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported adherence and the logistical difficulties of reaching remote communities.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Malaria Treatment Adherence: The degree to which individuals follow the prescribed malaria treatment regimen, including timely medication and follow-up visits.
  • Rural Communities: Areas characterized by low population density, limited access to healthcare, and often relying on traditional healthcare practices.
  • Nurse-Led Interventions: Actions and strategies initiated by nurses to educate, motivate, and monitor patients in adherence to prescribed treatments.
